DEC: 'No further action' needed at Kingsbury Landfill

KINGSBURY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - On Wednesday, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced "No further action needed" on a state superfund site in Kingsbury. The Kingsbury Landfill was declared all clear, decades after its involvement in a cleanup effort targeting pollution left behind by the General Electric Co. in 1985. Last month, the DEC held a public comment period, as well as a public meeting to present a proposed plan for the site, located near the intersection of Burgoyne Avenue and Pine Street in the town of Kingsbury. All of those factors came together to form the Record of Decision released on Wednesday."No Further Action with Site Management based on the results of the investigation at the site and actions that have already been implemented," the DEC wrote in a decision summary. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - A Missouri man will spend the rest of his life in prison for a brutal attack in 2014 that claimed the lives of three people, including a 7-year-old boy.After a three-day bench trial, St. Charles County Circuit Court Judge Rebecca Navarro-McKelvey convicted Shawn Kavanagh on March 17 on nine counts connected to the murders: three counts of first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, one count of first-degree domestic assault, and one count of first-degree burglary.On Tuesday, April 11, Navarro-McKelvey sentenced Kavanagh to life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation for each count of murder, 15 years on each count of armed criminal action, life imprisonment for domestic assault, and 15 years for the burglary. ST. LOUIS - A homicide investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in north St. Louis. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has identified Patrik' James, 33, as the victim. The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 2800 block of Gamble Street in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood. Police arrived to the scene within minutes, though the suspect was able to get away. James was found in the middle of a street with several gunshot wounds. A fatal fire that ravaged the Ivy Crossing Apartments was deliberately set, South Metro Fire Rescue and Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office investigators announced Wednesday.One person died and two were hospitalized in the fire on April 8 and 23 residents were displaced from the apartments at 2380 S. Consumer inflation continues its gradual descent in metro Denver, but it isn’t falling as fast as elsewhere in the country, according to a bi-monthly update from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood area advanced 1.3% between January and March and is running at an annual pace of 5.7%, which is down from the 6.4% annual rate measured in January. Nationally, consumer inflation increased at a 5% annual rate in March, which was down from a 6% annual pace in February.Annual gains of 10% in both rents and food prices helped keep inflation elevated in the region.
