Avalanche Journal: Jonathan Drouin, Valeri Nichushkin and others with the most to prove during training camp

For most of the top Stanley Cup contenders, there could be a sense right now of wanting to fast forward to the start of the regular season, or even later in the NHL calendar.Just get to the games that matter. Every one between now and then is just an opportunity for injury. That sentiment might feel true for some of the most established players on the Avalanche, but there are plenty who need this training camp on some level. It could be to fight for a roster spot, compete for a role in the lineup, move up in the queue for an in-season call-up or simply to give the organization a little less collective stress when the regular season commences Oct. 11 in Los Angeles. If everyone was healthy, there might only be one spot in the lineup and two to four places on the opening-night roster up for grabs, depending on how many extras the club can keep within the constraints of the salary cap. Everyone is not healthy, however, and more likely than not won’t be at various points in the season. One play before Sam Howell threw a 30-yard touchdown to Terry McLaurin early in the third quarter of Washington’s Week 2 win over Denver, he handed the ball to Brian Robinson, who started right and then cut back to the left for 11 yards.Outside linebacker Nik Bonitto wasn’t able to squeeze down the line of scrimmage and he was visibly frustrated after Robinson finished off the first-down run, clapping his hands together. For much of the remainder of the 35-33 Commanders win, Washington and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy went back after Bonitto’s side of the defense when he was in the game.According to The Post’s tally, Washington ran the ball eight more times with Bonitto in the game and six of them went in his direction. They gained 60 yards and a touchdown and also hit a 36-yard screen behind him as he rushed up the field out of control and fell into the left tackle.Of course, one player doesn’t stop the run by himself. Robinson ran directly off the left tackle at Bonitt...Walters: Politicians point fingers as homelessness crisis persists

Many political promises have been made, many billions of taxpayer dollars have been spent and many programs have been launched, but the state’s homelessness crisis continues to worsen and Californians’ tolerance has worn thin.A few months ago, the Public Policy Institute of California took the public’s temperature on the issue and found that overwhelming majorities of the state’s adults want something done, pronto. It’s one of the few major issues that bridges the state’s otherwise wide partisan divide.“Things have shifted, and everybody’s jobs are on the damn line, and they should be,” Gov. Gavin Newsom told a Dreamforce conference in San Francisco last week. “We’re only interested in real results, and that’s our commitment to all of you.”Underscoring the situation’s fraught politics, Newsom has denounced a federal magistrate who blocked San Francisco’s plans to clean up squalid encampments, pledged that the state will intervene in the case and expressed hop...1 dead, 3 others hurt in DC club shooting

WARSAW — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tried to rebuild bridges with Poland late on Saturday, seeking to take the sting out of a political dispute with Warsaw by giving awards to two Polish humanitarian volunteers on his way back from a trip to the U.S. and Canada. Although Poland was a die-hard ally of Ukraine in the early days of the Russian invasion, the conservative, nationalist government of the Law and Justice (PiS) party has taken an unexpectedly hard line against its war-torn neighbor in the past days, largely for reasons related to the impending election on October 15. In order to protect Polish farmers — crucial to the ruling party’s electoral prospects next month — Warsaw has blocked agricultural imports from Ukraine, in a protectionist move that Kyiv says is illegal and has referred to the World Trade Organization. Amid this dispute over food products, Warsaw made the shock announcement it would no longer send arms to Ukrainian forces fighting the Russian...Germany’s Scholz hints at checks on Polish border amid visa-for-bribes scandal

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Poland to clarify allegations of a visas-for-bribes scandal, airing concerns that it could be adding to his own country’s migration struggles.Just one month before a key general election in Poland, the government is grappling with allegations that operatives in consulates may have handed out thousands of Polish temporary work visas, and EU access, in return for bribes.“I don’t want people from Poland to simply be waved through, and then have a discussion about our asylum policy afterwards,” Scholz said Saturday at a rally of his Social Democratic Party. He called for discussions with Warsaw. “Further measures may then have to be taken at the borders, for example at this one,” Tagesspiegel quoted the chancellor as saying.Brussels has also urged clarity on the matter. In a letter that EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson sent to Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Zbigniew Rau, the bloc warned ...WATCH: Video shows Malden man kicking down turnstile gate at Park Street Station

Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 06:56:38 GMT
(CNN) — With the government on the brink of a shutdown this week as Congress remains at an impasse on a funding deal, federal departments and agencies have begun the mandatory process of planning to bring nonessential functions to a halt. The Office of Management and Budget reminded senior agency officials Friday to update and review shutdown plans.Every department and agency has its own set of plans and procedures. That guidance includes information on how many employees would get furloughed, which employees are essential and would work without pay, how long it would take to wind down operations in the hours before a shutdown, and which activities would come to a halt. Those plans can vary from shutdown to shutdown.Should Congress fail to pass a short-term spending bill to keep the proverbial lights on, a shutdown could have enormous impacts on all Americans, in areas from air travel to clean drinking water. The nearly 4 million Americans who are federal...Latest news
