BLETCHLEY PARK, England (AP) — U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are set to join delegates Thursday at a U.K. summit focused on containing risks from rapid advances in cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Sunak organized the first-ever AI Safety Summit as a forum for officials, experts and the tech industry to better understand “frontier” AI that some scientists warn could pose a risk to humanity’s very existence. The meeting, held at a former codebreaking spy base near London, kicked off on Wednesday with an agreement signed by 28 nations, including the U.S. and China, to work toward “shared agreement and responsibility” about AI risks, and a plan to hold further meetings in South Korea and France over the next year. Binding regulation for AI is not among the summit’s goals. Sunak has said that the U.K.’s approach should not be to rush into regulation but to fully understand AI first.

LONDON — A man has been arrested in Birmingham, England, for allegedly releasing live mice into a number of McDonald’s restaurants in what is said be a pro-Palestinian protest. The 32-year-old suspect was arrested Wednesday night after videos of the stunt went viral on social media. Footage released on TikTok shows boxes full of mice painted red, green, black, and white being released into a branch of the fast-food outlet, to the clear alarm of customers. The video included a graphic calling for a “targeted boycott” of McDonald’s, which along fellow large corporations including Starbucks and Disney+ has donated meals and other items to the Israeli military during its operations in Gaza.In the clip, the person behind the prank then runs out of the restaurant and can be heard saying “Free Palestine,” “Boycott Israel,” and “F*** Israel.”The original video is no longer available on TikTok, but has been widely shared elsewhere on the internet.West Midlands Police said Wednesday...German antisemitism: Robert Habeck jabs Muslim groups, threatens deportations

Germany’s Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck criticized Muslim groups while expressing concern over rising antisemitism in Germany and calling for tough consequences for people committing antisemitic acts.“Antisemitism is not to be tolerated in any form,” Habeck said Wednesday evening in a speech posted on X. “The extent of the Islamist demonstrations in Berlin and other cities in Germany is unacceptable and requires a tough political response.”Antisemitic acts — such as burning the Israeli flag — are a crime, Habeck said, and those committing them will have to face the consequences. “Anyone who is German will have to answer for it in court. If you’re not German, you also risk your residency status,” Habeck said in the video, which by Thursday morning had racked up more than 4.2 million views. “Anyone who doesn’t have a residence permit provides a reason to be deported.”Habeck, from Germany’s Green party, also called out German Muslim associations for failing...Latest news
