DENVER (KDVR) — New data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows fentanyl seizures are starting to decrease as we head into fall. Back in April, authorities seized more than 3,100 pounds of fentanyl, but now the number is closer to 1,700 pounds. That is slightly less than the same time last year. Some Republicans on Capitol Hill, including Colorado Congressman Ken Buck and Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, blame the influx of fentanyl on our streets to migrants crossing the border. Buck previously told Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, “When people die of fentanyl poisoning, it’s your fault.” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston responds to criticism over closing encampment Colorado Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen reacted to the data this week on Colorado Point of View, months after her first bill was introduced to investigate cartels bringing fentanyl into the U.S. The Democrat said that what Buck addressed was stigma rhetoric and misinformation. She added, “We absolut...Pentagon launching new website to share declassified UFO information with public

The Pentagon is set to offer a look into the world of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs), commonly known as UFOs, by launching a user-friendly website for the curious public. This initiative is being led by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, announced this development during a press briefing. The website will provide the public with declassified information, including photographs and videos, related to resolved UAP cases, once they have been cleared for public release. In addition to multimedia content, the website will also offer reports, trends, and a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section. Links to official reports, transcripts, press releases, and additional resources will be available for those seeking further information.Ryder emphasized the department’s commitment to transparency with the American people regarding AARO’s work on UAPs. FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (KPHO, KTVK) — Dane Wallace has been cycling his entire life. He’s taken his fair share of falls but he’s never experienced something like this. “I just felt the impact and then I was rolling on the ground for a while,” Wallace said. “It’s just terrifying.”Saturday, Wallace was biking on Lake Mary Road with a local cycling group, “Team Pay and Take” when he was hit in the head by an RV’s side mirror. His helmet came off, and he then crashed into multiple cyclists behind him, causing a pileup. “I mean, these people are like family,” Wallace said. “You know you ride with them every week. My partner was on the ride as well and she crashed right behind me. So your first thought is just like is everyone OK?”Wallace said the person driving the RV stopped and cooperated with police, but this is an important reminder to share the road as it’s state law to give cyclists at least 3 feet of space. “I think it’s just a sad point that when we get behind the wheel of a ca...Jerry Reinsdorf says he doesn’t plan to sell the Chicago White Sox: ‘I want to make it better before I go’

Those “Sell the team” signs seen at Guaranteed Rate Field the last two seasons haven’t persuaded Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf to take the advice of disgruntled Chicago White Sox fans.Asked during a meeting with selected reporters Thursday why he won’t sell the team, the 87-year-old Reinsdorf had a ready answer.“I’m going to couch this so nobody writes that I thought of selling,” Reinsdorf said. “Friends of mine have said: ‘Why don’t you sell? Why don’t you get out?’ My answer always has been: ‘I like what I’m doing, as bad as it is, and what else would I do?’“I’m a boring guy. I don’t play golf. I don’t play bridge. And I want to make it better before I go.”Reinsdorf is part of a group that has owned the Sox since 1981. They have won one championship in that span, in 2005, the only year they’ve won a playoff series during his regime. The clamor for Reinsdorf to s...Spain soccer coach regrets his support for Luis Rubiales and asks for forgiveness

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — First he backed his beleaguered boss. Then he condemned him. Now he is saying sorry for his part in the scandal that has tarnished Spanish soccer. The coach of Spain’s men’s national soccer team begged for forgiveness Friday for applauding the claim by Luis Rubiales that he was the victim of a smear campaign from “false feminists” following an uproar after he kissed a player on the lips at the Women’s World Cup.“I don’t think I have to resign, I think I have to ask for forgiveness,” Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said in Madrid in his first public appearance since Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on Aug. 20 after the final in Sydney, Australia. “I made a human error. It was inexcusable.”De la Fuente spoke one week after he clapped several times during an emergency general assembly of the Spanish soccer federation when Rubiales, the organization’s president, refused to step down as was expected. Rubiales’ speech included claims that Hermoso ...Rifle slaying of a brown bear in Italy leaves 2 cubs motherless and is decried by locals, minister

ROME (AP) — The slaying of an endangered brown bear near an Italian national park left her two young cubs motherless and sparked outrage on Friday in Italy.Voicing anger and dismay over the killing of the bear in the mountainous Abruzzo region were Italy’s environment minister and animal rights advocates. Locals, including families with small children, would stop and watch the bear and her cubs on the animal family’s frequent evening excursions through streets of towns near the park. The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise described the slain animal, nicknamed Amarena — or Black Cherry in Italian — as one of its most prolific brown bears. Locals affectionately coined the name because cherries and black cherries were among the bear’s favorite foods, Corriere della Sera daily said.Italian police were investigating the shooting late Thursday night in the town of San Benedetto dei Marsi. The man who shot the bear with a rifle told police the bear was on his property a...US employers added a solid 187,000 jobs in August in sign of a still-resilient labor market

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s employers added a solid 187,000 jobs in August in a sign of a still-resilient labor market despite the high interest rates the Federal Reserve has imposed. The job growth marked an increase from July’s revised gain of 157,000 but still pointed to a moderating pace of hiring compared with earlier this year. The unemployment rate rose from 3.5% to 3.8%, the highest level since February 2022 though still low by historical standards.A decelerating job market could help shift the economy into a slower gear and reassure the Fed that inflation will continue to decelerate. The Fed’s streak of 11 interest rate hikes have helped slow inflation from a peak of 9.1% last year to 3.2% now. Given signs that inflation has continued to ease, many economists think the Fed may decide no further rate hikes are necessary. The Fed wants to see hiring slow because intense demand for labor tends to inflate wages and feed inflation. The central bank hopes to achieve...Economy contracts in second quarter as higher interest rates take hold

OTTAWA — The Canadian economy appeared to stall in the second quarter as investment in housing continued to fall, led by drop in new construction.Statistics Canada said Friday the economy contracted at an annualized rate of 0.2 per cent in the second quarter. The agency also revised its reading for growth in the first quarter to an annual pace of 2.6 per cent, down from 3.1 per cent. The decline in the second quarter came as housing investment fell 2.1 per cent to post its fifth consecutive quarterly decrease.New construction dropped 8.2 per cent in the quarter, while renovation spending fell 4.3 per cent. The drop in spending came as Canadians face higher borrowing costs fuelled by interest rate hikes by the Bank of Canada, which is trying to bring inflation back to its target of two per cent. The weakness in the second quarter was also attributed to lower inventory accumulations, as well as slower growth in exports and household spending.Exports of goods and services crept up 0.1 per ...With some schools crumbling, UK government orders action on aging concrete risk

LONDON (AP) — The British government has ordered more than 100 schools to keep some or all of their buildings closed when the new academic year begins next week because of concern crumbling concrete threatens the safety of children and staff. The announcement, which came late on Thursday, sent school administrators scrambling to find ways to accommodate pupils, with some expected to return to the online instruction used during the COVID-19 pandemic. The timing of the decision, just days before the start of classes, raised questions from parents and school officials about why the government didn’t act sooner.Schools Minister Nick Gibb told the BBC that a beam collapse over the summer sparked an urgent reconsideration of whether buildings constructed with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete were safe for school children. The Department for Education ordered 104 schools to keep some or all of their buildings closed when the autumn term begins on Monday.“That’s a very cautious approac...Latest news
