By Lisa Mascaro and Farnoush Amiri | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Speaker Kevin McCarthy is confronting his hard-right critics head-on Tuesday as he faces a historic challenge to oust him from leadership, insisting he will not cut a deal with Democrats to remain in power and setting the stage for an extraordinary and unpredictable showdown on the House floor. The Republican McCarthy’s fate is deeply uncertain as he faces what’s known as a “motion to vacate” from Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a strident critic allied with Donald Trump. It would take the support of only a handful of Republicans from his slim majority to remove McCarthy as speaker if Democrats vote in favor alongside the conservative rebels.Behind closed doors early Tuesday, McCarthy told fellow Republicans: Let’s get on with it.“If I counted how many times someone wanted to knock me out, I would have been gone a long time ago,” McCarthy said at the Capitol after a private morning...Why enclosed outdoor cat areas, or catios, might be what you and your pet need

Meow. It’s Whiskers, your cat. Yes, I can talk. It’s just that I usually don’t bother. However, I want to tell you about this thing I need you to do: Build me a catio on the back of your house; a catio, as you may have guessed, is a patio for cats. That’s right, it will be my domain, an outdoor space that’s screened in, to keep me safe from cars and coyotes while also protecting the unfortunate critters I might hunt. This would be a good compromise to our never-ending skirmishes where I try to escape – unfortunately, I can’t work the doorknob, no opposable thumbs, so I typically just attempt to dart out the door – and you try to keep me locked inside, don’t you? Here’s what you need to know: Catios can range from a simple windowbox cut-out to a full enclosure across one side of the house. They need to be attached to the house in some fashion and have a cat door, so I can come and go as I please. I am a cat, after all.Dana Stangel, who organized this year’s Los Angeles Catio Tour to be ...20 loudest Disneyland rides and 20 noisiest shows — with decibel readings

Disneyland’s monorail horn is as loud as a piledriver, its railroad trains as ear-splitting as a jackhammer and the nightly fireworks more deafening than a bulldozer, according to a noise analysis conducted on behalf of the Anaheim theme park. The decibel readings for attractions, shows and parades at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are buried deep in the 17,000-page Environmental Impact Report released in mid-September by the city of Anaheim for Disney’s expansion initiative known as DisneylandForward.SEE ALSO: Disneyland theme park expansion envisions 16 rides and an outdoor showThe Disneyland resort noise analysis was conducted by Veneklasen Associates over eight days in April 2022 with a follow-up study in June 2022. A few thousand people beg to differ

You may have read the story over the weekend about struggling downtowns, based on a poll conducted by the Bay Area News Group and Joint Venture Silicon Valley. Seventy-nine percent of the poll respondents said they rarely or never visit downtown San Jose, with 76 percent saying the primary reason was they didn’t “have a reason to visit.”Let me offer a few suggestions. This past weekend, for example, more than 11,000 people ventured downtown to participate in the Rock N Roll Half-Marathon and its related races, a few thousand were taking in the Little Italy Festival and 49ers fans were at San Pedro Square to watch Sunday’s big victory. That’s not to mention the people who went to San Jose Symphony’s season-opening weekend performance, saw “Bald Sisters” at San Jose Stage or “Toxic” at City Lights or caught the last couple of Broadway San Jose performances of “Hadestown” at the Center for the Performing Arts.A cas...Sale closed in Fremont: $2.4 million for a detached house
