Liberia’s leader Weah is facing a tight runoff vote for a second term against challenger Boakai MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — Liberian President George Weah faced a tight runoff election Tuesday as he seeks to defeat a repeat challenger and win a second term in the West African nation. The former international soccer star easily defeated Joseph Boakai in the 2017 runoff, but results from the first round of balloting last month showed the two neck and neck. Weah took 43.83% while Boakai brought in 43.44% of the total.“We are going to an election where nobody has a competitive edge with a wide margin,” said Ibrahim Nyei, executive director at the Ducor Institute for Social and Economic Research. In the weeks since the Oct. 10 first round, the candidates actively sought the endorsements of the other opposition parties. Boakai won the backing of the third, fourth and fifth-place finishers. While that amounts to only 5.6% of the vote, it could tilt the runoff in Boakai’s favor.Weah has received the support of two other opposition parties.Liberia’s 2.47 million regi...

Home Depot sales continue to slide but the biggest home improvement chain still tops expectations Home Depot sales continue to slide as Americans wrestle with persistent inflation and the company narrowed its outlook for the year. But the nation’s biggest home improvement retailer still topped expectations for the quarter. Home Depot now expects an earnings per share to decline between 9% and 11% in 2023 and same store sales to fall 3% to 4%. The company previously anticipated an earnings per share drop between 7% and 13% and a same-store sales decline of 2% to 5%.It’s the first time that Home Depot has projected a decline in annual sales since 2009, when the U.S. economy was decimated by a massive housing bubble. Inflation is hitting Home Depot on a number of fronts. Americans are more closely watching where they spend money as costs rise. The average receipt at Home Depot declined 0.3% from last year during the same period, and customer transactions are down 2.4%. It is also getting more expensive to put big-ticket items on credit cards or to take out a loan to buy...

No. 12 Miami rallies from 2nd-half deficit, then holds off crosstown rival FIU 86-80 CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — This time, the only punches that Miami and FIU threw at one another were theoretical. And the Panthers nearly got a stunning knockout.Matthew Cleveland scored 23 points, Bensley Joseph and Wooga Poplar each added 18 and No. 12 Miami rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to beat neighboring FIU 86-80 on Monday night.Nigel Pack scored 17 points and Norchad Omier had 11 rebounds for the Hurricanes (3-0).“Very proud of our guys for hanging in there,” Miami coach Jim Larrañaga said. “And very impressed with FIU.”Anyone who was watching would likely have said the same, after a game with some wild ebbs and flows. Consider:— Miami started the game on a 28-11 run over 10 minutes.— FIU answered with a 42-13 run over the next 14 minutes.— Miami immediately came back with a 19-0 run over the next four minutes. The Panthers fell to 0-25 all-time against ranked opponents — but made the nine-mile drive back to their campus knowing they nearly changed that.“Had we won...

Orbán to David Cameron: Great to have you back, buddy Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Tuesday joined a chorus of European heavyweights welcoming ex-British Prime Minister David Cameron’s unexpected return to politics.“Difficult times require experienced leaders. Glad to see a friendly and familiar face in the arena of politics,” Orbán said on X.Cameron, who resigned as U.K. prime minister in 2016, made a stunning comeback to British politics on Monday by becoming the U.K.’s new foreign secretary as part of a broad reshuffle of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet. The former Conservative prime minister had a troubled relationship with the EU during his time in power — not least because of his role in initiating the 2016 Brexit referendum, which created years of tension between London and Brussels. At times, Cameron’s distrust of EU affairs put him in the same corner as Orbán.In 2014, the pair were the only ones who voted against the election of Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the Eur...

Walmart, Costco and other companies rethink self-checkout New York (CNN) — The backlash against self-checkout is growing, and stores are starting to dial back on the technology after it exploded over the past few years.Booths, a British supermarket chain, said it’s removing self-checkout stations in all but two of its 28 stores. Alcohol purchases also were not smooth transactions through self-checkout because employees had to verify customers’ ages.“Some customers don’t know one different apple versus another, for example,” Murray said. “There’s all so...
